How to Weave a Rope Belt
A woven rope belt is a thin, flexible, interlaced rope that is tied around the waist or hips to hold up clothing. Woven rope belts also make fun fashion accessories, as they can be created with a combination of rope colors, for an individual woven design that reflects your personal style. Store-bought woven rope belts can be expensive, but once you master the braiding technique you can weave your own rope belt for a fraction of the cost.

1
Measure the circumference around your waist or hips with the tape measure. Double this measurement. Measure and cut three lengths of rope to this measurement.
-
2
Arrange the strands so that all three of them start and finish at the same place. Tie a knot in the top of the rope. Place the top of the three strands under a pile of heavy books, alternatively you can ask a friend to hold the ends of the rope while you are weaving.

Position the three strands so that one lies on the left, one on the right and one in the middle. Pick up the strand on the left, and move it underneath the middle strand, so it sits in the middle. Pick up the rope on the right and move it underneath the middle strand, so that it now lies in the middle position. Repeat this process until the desired length of rope has been braided.

Tie the bottom of the rope in a knot. Remove the belt from underneath the books. Tie the belt around the waist or hips, and secure in a loose knot or bow.

Tips & Warnings
For the best results use rope that is less than 3 cm thick.
Nylon or wax-coated rope carries a higher risk of unraveling. You may want to secure the ends of these braids with a double-knot or with superglue to prevent unraveling from happening.
