How to Make Chinese Fried Doughnuts

There's no need to head to the Chinese buffet to be able to indulge in Chinese fried doughnut. Those fluffy, sugar-coated balls of dough are surprisingly simple to prepare. Although similar to a regular doughnut, the Chinese doughnuts are round balls, not rings with a hole in the middle, and they don't contain milk in the recipe like most typical donuts.   • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 1/2 cups rice flour
  • Three eggs
  • Peanut oil

Instructions

      Combine the water, sugar and salt in a small saucepan on the stove and bring to a boil.

      Remove the mixture from the heat and slowly stir in the flour, mixing thoroughly until well combine. Pour into a mixing bowl and leave to cool.

      Beat in the eggs once the mixture has cooled using an electric mixer.

      Add oil to a large, deep pan, about half way up the pan and heat to 375 degrees F. You can also use a deep fryer.

      Use an ice cream scooper to scooper balls of dough from the bowl and place into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pan.

      Cook the doughnuts until they turn golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels or a cooling rack with paper towels underneath.

      Roll the doughnuts in a bowl of sugar making sure they are fully coated. Repeat frying in batches until all the batter is used up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some Chinese doughnuts are rolled in sesame seeds if you prefer more savory doughnut.

  • To save time, you can quickly make these doughnuts by frying canned refrigerated biscuits and rolling them in sugar.
