How to Tell the Age of an Apple Tree

Not all apple trees produce apples for their entire lifespan.

While the easiest way to determine the age of an apple tree is by cutting it down and counting the rings on the interior, that's not always possible. However, you don't have to wait for your tree to die or hire a professional to obtain a core boring to determine its age. A few simple measurements and a little math tells you all you need to know.

Things You'll Need

• Measuring tape
• Calculator

Instructions

1. Measure the tree trunk 4 1/2 feet from the ground. At that spot, wrap the tape measure around the tree trunk to get a circumference measurement. Note the circumference measurement.

2. Multiply the circumference of the tree by 3.14 to determine the diameter of the apple tree. Write down the diameter.

3. Determine your specific tree's growth factor by converting the percentage of growth each year to a decimal. The growth rate of each apple tree species differs. Your county extension agent may be able to help you determine your variety's growth rate.

4. Multiply the diameter by the tree species' growth factor to calculate the age.
