How to Easily Get Picked to be in the National Honor Society

The National Honor Society, or NHS, is an organization for high school students. The students who are chosen are academically successful and involved in their school and community. Once you're in the National Honor Society, you may be able to receive scholarships to continue your education. If you want to make sure you are picked for NHS, there are a few things that you can do to increase your chances of gaining membership.

  • Study the main criteria for getting into the National Honor Society. These are scholarship, service, leadership and character. Apply each of these concepts to your school life. For example, try out to be captain on sports team or run for school office to exhibit leadership.

  • Keep your grades at a B average or above. The higher your grades, the more likely it is that you will be picked to be in the NHS. If you do not participate in very many extracurricular activities, keeping near an A average is essential.

  • Get involved with school activities. Those that include a leadership role are looked upon more favorably by the NHS. Remember, however, that active participation in the activities matters, since the teachers that supervise them may be some of the people voting on your inclusion in the NHS.

  • Volunteer in your community. Giving your time to serve others is something the National Honor Society looks for in members. Volunteering for organizations and events is more valuable than just helping out around your neighborhood because it can be successfully documented.

  • Stay out of trouble. If you frequently are in trouble at school, the NHS likely will not choose you. Ask the faculty in charge of the NHS in your school for a specific list of the actions that will disqualify students.

  • Fill out the membership application in its entirety and include all of your activities and volunteer work. Your school will provide you with the application. Be specific whenever possible. For example, it is better to say that you volunteered with the Humane Society than to helped dogs.
