Artistic drawing is a creative outlet as well as a potential career option for individuals who find they have a talent for drawing and the motivation to work and improve as an artist. Before you can draw detailed images, however, it is important to start with basic drawings to improve your drawing skills while still creating final products that are pleasing to the eye. A cartoon rocket is a simple drawing exercise that provides useful experience as an artist.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Pen
  • Draw a triangle shape lightly with pencil, then draw darker pencil lines to round out the shape of the triangle, so that the short edge bulges slightly and the long ends reach to the far point with a rounded arch.

  • Draw fins on both sides of the base of the rocket, on the long sides just above the bulging short side.

  • Add a fin on the rocket facing up off the page by drawing a rectangle that ends in a pointed tip near the top end of it with the top and bottom of the rectangle matching the top and bottom of the side fins.

  • Draw an arch near the tip of the rocket to make the cone of the rocket.

  • Draw a circle half as wide as the body of the rocket below the cone, then draw a second smaller circle inside the larger one. This is a porthole on the ship.

  • Draw a vertical line on either side of the rectangular fin, starting slightly below the fin and stopping slightly above the bottom of the fin, then draw horizontal lines from both ends of the lines to the side of the ship nearest each fin. This creates two panels on the ship.

  • Draw rocket boosters on the bottom of the rocket by making a pair of trapezoids with the short sides of the trapezoids touching the bottom of the rocket and the long sides facing down.

  • Draw fire coming out of the thrusters by making squiggly lines under the rocket boosters.
