How to Detect Edges in Illustrator CS5

Save

If you want to run text around an image in Adobe Illustrator, it is important that you first detect the edges of the image. Detecting the edges allows the text in your text box to recognize that it should not run over these edges and instead run around the edges. Detecting the edges also prepares the image to allow you to alter aspects of it if you desire.

  • Double-click the "Illustrator" icon on your computer to open the program.

  • Click "File" and "Open" to open the document that includes an image for which you want to detect edges.

  • Click the "Select" tool (black arrow) in the toolbox, then click the image for which you want to detect the edges.

  • Click the "Object" menu and select "Clipping Path."

  • Choose "Detect Edges" in the "Clipping Path" dialog box that appears and click "OK." The edges of the image are now detected and outlined.
