How to Find Out What Type of Wingback Chair You Have

Save

Wingback chairs have been around in the U.S. and Europe since the 1700s. The wings protrude from the sides of the chair's back, giving it its name. Wingback chairs range from antique to modern, making statements in every home they grace. If you're not sure of the type of wingback chair you have, you can find out by a careful examination. However, dating a wingback chair is best done by antique experts.

  • Look at the upholstery on your wingback chair. If the upholstery is older and faded, you may have an antique wingback chair, possibly a Queen Anne. Queen Anne furniture is often covered in floral upholstery and has gently curved wings, instead of sharply defined ones. If the upholstery appears new, the wingback chair is most likely contemporary.

  • Examine the style of the wings on the chair. If they protrude from the sides of the back of the chair forward, it is a more classically-styled wingback chair and possibly an antique. If the wings protrude up at the sides of the back of the chair, it is a more modern wingback chair. Modern wingback chairs could also be vintage to the 1950s and 1960s.

  • Look at the legs of the chair. Antique or antique-style wingback chairs often have wooden legs whereas modern wingback chairs have metal or upholstered legs.
