How to Mark Forwarded Mail in Gmail

Almost everyone has at least one friend who loves to forward emails. These might be jokes, political messages or virus warnings. Even if you appreciate these forwarded emails, they can also conceal personal and business emails among the masses of forwards. Gmail does not provide an obvious way to mark forwarded emails, but because forwarded emails include the "fwd:" text, you can create a filter and have all forwarded emails go into their own unique folder for easier identification.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your browser and log in to your Gmail account.

    • 2

Click the top-right gear icon on the Gmail page and select "Mail settings."

    • 3

Click the top "Filters" tab and click "Create a new filter" on the bottom of the tab.

    • 4

Enter "Fwd: OR Fw:" without the quotation marks in the "Subject" field. Make sure "OR" is in all caps.

    • 5

      Click "Next Step."

    • 6

Check "Mark as read" to mark all forwarded emails as read. Alternatively, check "Star it" to mark the messages with a star.

    • 7

Click "Create Filter" to mark forwarded emails.
