Draw bunches of elegant roses.

Drawing roses is an ideal way to learn how to develop your drawing style. The elegant and delicate flowers will give you inspiration to design any gift or greeting card. Although roses may seem to be complicated flowers to draw, following simple, step-by-step guidelines will have you blooming with drawing success. Once you have mastered drawing roses, you can try drawing all different kinds of flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw three curved lines on a sheet of paper for the stems. Try to cross the lines over slightly so there is some correlation in their positioning. At the top of each line, draw an oval of about 3 inches.

    • 2

Draw lines for branches and smaller curved lines coming off each central stem. At the end of each branch, draw small, 1.5-inch oval shapes, which will become the rose leaves.

    • 3

Start with the large oval shapes that stand on the top of the stems. Draw a small spiral in the center of one oval. This is the beginning of your rose head. Then draw wide, curved petal lines that continue around the spiralling shape. As you get closer to the oval-shaped guideline you originally marked out, make sure the petal shapes become wider. Define each petal shape by drawing a small tip that curves up from the middle of each petal. Follow the same steps for the remaining two oval shapes, creating two more rose heads.

    • 4

Thicken the stem lines for each rose. Draw triangle-shaped thorns that come off the stems.

    • 5

Create leaf shapes using the small oval shapes at the end of the branches. Curve the oval shapes into a point, and cut the leaves in half with a line to show the veins.

    • 6

Outline your defined drawing lines and erase any sketched lines. Color in your roses. Use shades of red, and place emphasis on the shading when coloring in your roses. Press heavily towards the center of the rose petals and lighter as you bring the petals outwards. This will create a depth to your rose drawing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment by drawing different types of roses, such as closed-bud roses and different-colored roses.
