How to Create a Password-Protected Folder in XP
There are several reasons for wanting to password-protect a folder. Whatever your reason for needing to protect your information, Windows XP includes a built-in tool for getting the job done without the need to download and install complicated or expensive third-party encryption software.

Right-click on the folder that you want to password protect. Right-clicking in Windows XP will brings up a context-specific menu that lists options related to the item you've clicked on.

Choose "Send to Compressed (Zipped) folder." This will compress your folder, making it take up less disk space. Folders must first be compressed before you can add a password.

Double-click the compressed folder and choose "Add a Password" from the File menu list.

Enter the password into the "Password" box, then type it again in the "Confirm Password" box. Click "Ok." Your folder is now password-protected.
