How to Make a Folding Children's Paper With Questions
The fortune teller, or sometimes known to children as the "cootie catcher," is a game made from paper. The fact that the creation is really an origami craft is usually not known or the focus when this paper game is played. The fortune teller is a four-squared construction, in which you insert your thumbs and fingers to count out selections as you ask someone to choose colors or numbers. Prewritten fortunes hidden inside the squares beneath a flap are eventually arrived at and read to the recipient.

Make a square of the sheet of paper by bringing one top corner down and over to meet the opposite edge of the paper. Fold and crease along the diagonal, resulting in about a 2-inch strip of excess paper at the bottom of your folded area.

Use a scissors and cut off the bottom strip at the edge of the folded over section of paper.

Fold the triangle you have left in half, creating another smaller triangle. Unfold. You should have a square with an X creased across the center.

Fold the top corner down to the center point and crease. Repeat with the bottom point, meeting the center point in the middle. Do the same with both side points until all four points meet in the center and you have a square-shaped piece.

Flip the paper over. Repeat Step 4, bringing first the top and bottom points to the center and creasing, then the sides. Fold the resulting square in half across the width, that is, side to side not top to bottom.

Slide your fingers up under the bottom flaps and pop out the four corners, making pillow-like shapes with your fingers tucked up beneath them. This allows you to manipulate the game back and forth, opening first one way and then the next.

Lay out the piece again, and write a color on each of the four squares on the top. Unfold the flaps. Write a number on each of the eight triangles that are made by the folds inside. Unfold once more, and write a fortune on each of the eight triangles on this square. Fortunes can be of your choosing with phrases like "have a long and happy life" or "you will have good luck today." Refold so that the colors face up on the top and the game is now operable.
