How to Get a Particular Phone Number if It Is Not Used
Phone companies traditionally designate consumers' phone numbers. While phone companies are contractually obligated to allow you to transfer providers and continue with your current phone number, you may want a change. Getting a particular phone number if it is not used--be it a new number or a number no longer in use--requires you to reach out to your phone provider and ask the right questions.

1
Contact your land-line and/or mobile phone provider. Direct your call to the technical or phone plan services department. Have your account and personal identification information handy to expedite the process.
-
2
Place the primary account holder on the phone to speak with the representative. Most times only the designated primary account holder can request and/or authorize contract changes or equipment updates--including a phone number transfer.

3
Ask the representative directly if there is an unused phone number you may obtain. Inquire if the company can port a previously used number--or a number not in use--from an old phone or a subsidiary carrier.
