How to Cord a Poodle

How to Cord a Poodle thumbnail
Traditionally, poodle coats are brushed out.

While the poodle coat is more traditionally brushed out and clipped into a show cut or some other pattern, some prefer the look of the corded coat. A corded coat is a series of mats shaped like ropes and is more commonly seen on a Komondor. The look of a corded poodle is beautiful and unique, but it takes a lot of patience and careful attention. Keeping the coat clean and dry is very important.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what areas you want to let cord and what areas you want to shave. For example, shave the ears and the hindquarters for comfort and hygiene.

    • 2

Use clippers to shave the areas.

    • 3

Let the rest of the coat begin to grow out and form mats on its own.

    • 4

Separate any large mats into smaller mats by pulling with your fingers in a gentle, outward (never downward) manner away from the skin.

    • 5

Spray coat lightly with leave-in conditioner once a week. Dry thoroughly every time.

    • 6

Bathe your poodle every week with a low-suds shampoo. Rinse thoroughly.

    • 7

Dry completely with towels or use a stand-up dryer.

Tips & Warnings

  • A corded coat will pick up more debris when your poodle romps outside. Dry the coat thoroughly every time it gets wet to avoid mold and mildew.
