How to Flare Copper Pipes

Rigid copper pipe has a thick sidewall and requires the use of fittings to create 90 degree turns. New flexible copper pipe allows you to bend pipe to 90-degree angles without cutting and soldering. This type of pipe requires you to flare the ends so you can attach the pipe to a flare or compression fitting. This is the most efficient way of connecting copper pipes when installing new pipe. Instructions

    • 1

Cut the end of the soft copper tubing so the face is flat. Use a hacksaw or a pipe cutter for this.

    • 2

Slide the flare nut onto the copper tubing. If you forget and flare the copper tubing before you put on the flare nut, you will not be able to put the nut onto the tubing.

    • 3

Place the cooper tube into the appropriate hole in the tubing vice clamp and secure it by tightening the clamp's thumbscrews.

    • 4

Slide the part of the flaring tool that has the cone shaped flaring attachment over the flaring clamp and center the coned flaring attachment over the hole in the pipe.

    • 5

Slide the handle into the threaded post and turn the handle clockwise to lower the coned flaring attachment into the pipe. Stop when the flaring attachment bottoms out inside the tubing vice clamp.
