Numbered footnotes can help to clarify difficult concepts.

Microsoft Word is a word processor that can create letters, books and reports. Many documents require the use of footnotes and endnotes, which can add context to your writing. Footnotes and endnotes in Microsoft Word are generally automatically numbered. However, they can be changed to special symbols or letters instead of numbers. If you want to change your endnotes or footnotes to have numbers, format the notes in the "References" tab.

Instructions

    • 1

      Click the "References" tab.

    • 2

Click the arrow next to "Footnotes."

    • 3

Click the "Number format" down arrow to display the drop-down list.

    • 4

      Click "1,2,3...".

    • 5

Click "Apply." Any footnotes and endnotes in the document will be reformatted as numbers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose "Continuous" from the Footnote and Endnote window if you want the numbers to run sequentially throughout the entire document.
