How to Use Thunderbird to Get Webmail

How to Use Thunderbird to Get Webmail thumbnail
Thunderbird can pull webmail from multiple accounts.

In a corporate environment, a high-powered server owned by the organization handles the sending and receiving of emails. At home, however, it wouldn't make sense to pay for your own mail server. Most users have their email accounts hosted online by sites such as Gmail or Yahoo!, or by their ISPs, such as Comcast or Verizon. Although your mail is hosted online, you can still have it downloaded into a mail application on your computer. The free Mozilla application, Thunderbird, is capable of downloading your webmail and presenting it to you on your local system.

Instructions

  1. Automatic Account Configuration

    • 1

Launch the Thunderbird application. Click "File," select "New" and click "Mail Account." This will launch the account setup window.

    • 2

Enter your name, email address and the password you use to access your webmail account. Click "Continue." Thunderbird will automatically detect the necessary settings for your account.

    • 3

Click "Create Account" from the account settings window to complete the account configuration. If Thunderbird was unable to automatically detect the account settings, you'll need to do a manual setup.

    Manual Account Configuration

    • 4

Launch Thunderbird. Click "File," select "New" and click "Mail Account."

    • 5

Enter your name, email address and the password you use to access your webmail account. Click "Continue."

    • 6

Click "Manual Setup" from the account settings page. You will need to contact your mail provider to get the necessary information to complete the setup.

    • 7

Enter the outgoing mail server information by entering the server name and port number. The server name will likely look something like smtp.mailprovider.com.

    • 8

Click "Use name and password" for authentication and enter your log-in information. Click "OK." Thunderbird will complete the account configuration at this point.

    Read Your Email

    • 9

Click to select your newly created account from the account list on the left side of the Thunderbird window. Click "Inbox." Thunderbird will download your webmail every 10 minutes.

    • 10

Click "File," select "Get new messages for" and click your account name to force a sync and get your emails immediately.

    • 11

Click an email header to view the contents of the email in the viewing pane at the bottom of the Thunderbird window.
