How to Size Your Torso for a Backpack
An ill-fitting backpack not only causes immediate discomfort but potentially leads to problems in the future, like aches and pains, bent backs and uncomfortable shoulders. Locate the seventh cervical vertebra. Tilt your head forward and have someone locate the bump that sits at the base of the neck.

Put your hands on your hips. Situate your hands so your thumbs are behind you, not in front of you.

Measure your spine. Have someone use a fabric measuring tape and start measuring at the bump at the base of the neck. Measure down the spine until you reach the thumbs. The measurement taken is your torso length.

Find your proper backpack size. Most backpacks range in size from extra small to large. An extra-small backpack fits torso sizes ranging up to 15.5 inches. Small backpacks are indicated for torsos that range from 16 inches to 17.5 inches. Medium backpacks are ideal for torsos that range from 18 inches to 19.5 inches and large backpacks are designed for torsos that are 20 inches or larger.

Always try on the backpack to ensure that you are comfortable wearing it. Look for features such as comfortable straps and padding.
