How to Raise Followers on Twitter
Twitter provides a powerful means of building a network of followers that reflect your core personality and goals in life. Raising followers on Twitter should be approached in a personal and mindful manner, just as you would build a network of face to face people in your everyday personal or professional life. Create a list of keywords associated with your network building goals and write them down on a piece of paper or create a computer document. For example, if you're a yoga instructor looking to broaden her client base and colleague network, your list may include yoga teachers, meditation, yoga poses and yoga studios.

Go to Search.Twitter.com and type in one of your keywords. A list of people writing about those words will appear, in addition to those using a "#hashtag" to categorize their tweets. A hashtag is placed before the keyword and allows people to tag a tweet so other users searching for the same term can interact and connect.

Find a person with a question or interesting information regarding your keyword and go to their profile page. Visit their page by selecting their username and clicking on the "View Full Profile" link underneath their name in the slide-out menu on the main Twitter website.

Scroll through their timeline and look for signs of conversation in their Twitter use. A conversation is indicated by the use of public replies using the "@username" handle in a tweet. The "@username" in a tweet goes directly to that person and is used to bring someone into a conversation or to ask a direct question publicly so other users may follow and interact with the conversation.

Follow the external links to the person's website if posted in their profile. This will also give you an idea of who this person is and why you may want to connect with them using Twitter.

Follow the person by selecting the green "Follow" button on their profile page once you've determined that this person could provide a meaningful interaction for you and your goals.

Answer people's questions or provide useful links and information using the public reply and be sure to include their "@username" in the answer. This allows you to establish a relationship with a person by providing a service to your followers based on your areas of expertise and interest.

Approach building your Twitter followers in the same manner you would any face to face networking or social interaction. Twitter is based on real, authentic relationships with people and most users of the platform have little to no tolerance for excessive marketing or inauthentic behavior.
A good rule of thumb to follow for Twitter is that if you wouldn't do this behavior at a networking event or in a coffee shop, don't do it on Twitter.
Avoid using applications that automatically add followers to your Twitter account. Such automated practices do not help you build strong and engaging communities on the platform. People are more likely to recommend your services if they have a personal relationship with you.
