How to Make a Pencil Capo
A capo is an essential device for many guitar players. A capo makes it possible to play in every key with a few basic chord shapes. Guitar players also use capos so that they can incorporate open strings into their arrangement of particular songs. It is always a hassle when you set up for a gig and realize that you have lost or left your capo somewhere. Knowing how to improvise and make a homemade capo will get you through the gig. All you need is a pencil and two rubber bands.

Place the pencil on the fretboard on the side of the fret facing the headstock. The pencil should be near the fret but not touching it,

Loop a rubber band around one end of the pencil. Pull the rubber band behind the neck of the guitar towards the other end of the pencil. Loop the rubber band over the other the end of the pencil. Repeat the process with a second rubber band for to make the pencil capo more tight and secure.

Play the six strings of the guitar one at a time to test the capo. Each string should be clear and distinct. Muted or muffled notes indicate that the capo needs to be tighter. Unhook one end of one of the rubber bands. Pull it tighter to increase the tension and reattach it to the pencil.
