How to Get a VAT Return
If you are traveling in Europe and have loaded your suitcases with souvenirs and other purchases, remember to keep your receipts so you may acquire a tax refund. VAT, or value-added tax, is a tax added onto the price of goods. This tax may be as high as 25 percent in some European countries, but you may be eligible for a VAT refund.

1
Bring your passport when shopping. Look for tourist-friendly shops that offer VAT returns. If you're unsure, ask the clerk whether the store offers VAT returns.
-
2
Tell the clerk you want a VAT return when you're making a purchase. Show him your passport and fill out the necessary forms he provides. Keep these forms with your receipt so you may present them at the airport. Ask the clerk whether the store offers VAT returns directly or through a refund agency. If the store is shipping your purchases for you, ask if you will receive a VAT return on the spot.

Bring your unused purchases, receipts and VAT forms to the airport. Arrive early and find the customs office. Show your goods and documents to a customs officer, who will stamp your forms. If you've already used any of the goods you've bought, the customs officer may not stamp your forms.

Look for a VAT refund agency office at the airport, usually located past check-in and security. If you have purchased any goods from a store that works with a refund agency, present the agency with your stamped VAT forms for a refund. The agency will provide a refund in local currency, which you may exchange at the airport.

5
Mail your stamped VAT forms back to any store that deals with VAT returns directly. The store will either refund your credit card or mail you a check. Be patient: It could take months to receive your refund.
