How to Turn a Mac Mini Into a Recording Studio

If you want to make your own home-based recording studio, a Mac Mini may be an ideal choice. Compact and inexpensive, the Mac Mini also includes all the software you need to get started: Garage Band. Part of the Apple iLife bundle included in every Mac Mini, Garage Band allows you to record, compose, mix tracks and export your music to MP3 format. To begin, all you need is a single acoustic instrument, a microphone and headphones. You can add to your studio over time.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble your instruments together and determine a budget for your recording studio. If you have only acoustic instruments, a quality microphone may be enough. You will also need speakers or headphones.

    • 2

Consider purchasing a USB MIDI keyboard. Make sure it is compatible with Mac OS X and includes the required drivers. Depending on the model, these can be very inexpensive and usually come with synthesizer options, which you can use to play a variety of instruments.

    • 3

Purchase an audio interface if you have electric instruments, or if you plan to use a microphone with an 1/8-inch jack rather than a USB microphone. This device will allow you to connect these components to your Firewire or USB port. Some audio interfaces also include a MIDI keyboard, saving you from purchasing both separately.

Plug in your microphone, open Garage Band and begin recording. You can use multiple tracks on Garage Band, allowing you to record one instrument at a time if you are short on jacks. Then mix the tracks together and save your recording as an MP3.

Download iTunes if it is not installed already. Import your MP3 files to iTunes. Then insert a CD-R into your disc drive and burn your music to a CD.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also compose music directly on Garage Band using a variety of instruments built into the software. This is a great way to add background instruments or sound effects to your tracks without the need of additional instruments.
