Basic mathematical expressions are easily typed using a computer's number keys. If you're doing a slightly more complex math equation using exponents, you won't find the necessary symbols on a standard keyboard. However, computers are capable of utilizing a plethora of special characters with "Alt" code commands. Typing the right sequence on a standard keyboard lets you insert the second power in virtually all PC programs.
Step 1
Click on the space just to the right of the number you want to raise to the second power.

Press your computer's "NumLock" key to turn on your 10-key pad.
Step 3
Press and hold the "Alt" key.
Step 4
Type "0178" into your computer using the numeric keypad. Once you finish the four-digit sequence, the superscript "2" appears on the screen.
