How to Get Taxi Plates in New Jersey
If you live in New Jersey and you're interested in starting your own taxi business, you must apply in the municipality where you wish to drive. Each town and city in New Jersey has its own special requirements to become a taxi driver. In order to legally operate a taxi in New Jersey, you must have an original letter of authorization from the municipality where you will be driving the taxi. Driving outside the area in which you are licensed is illegal.

Talk to the clerk in the city or township where you wish to operate a cab. Ask him for the proper forms to obtain a license.

Fill out the forms the clerk gives you. The required information varies from town to town, but normally includes your name, information on your company and the car or cars that will be used as taxis.

Obtain your criminal history and driver history from the state police. You will also need to submit fingerprints with your application. Some communities will require a mental health check.

Include a copy of your New Jersey driver's license and proof that you can legally work in the United States. Some communities will require letters of reference and two passport photos.

Once you gather the required information, file your application with the clerk. Pay the filing fee. which varies from community to community (Morristown charged $50 per driver in 2011). Wait for the forms to be processed.
