How to Replace the Battery in a VW Key Fob

by Warren B. Schatzle Jr.

If your Volkswagen dealer suggests you have to replace your whole switchblade key when the buttons stop working, think twice. Your key fob may just need a new battery. Changing the battery in a 2001 to 2005 Volkswagen key fob can seem intimidating and counter-intuitive at first glance, but once you know how, it's quite simple. Haphazardly trying to pry open the key fob case without knowing how could damage your remote, so it's important to know how to do it right the first time.

Step 1

Press the button on your key fob to release the key into the open position.

Step 2

Thread the round key ring through the key ring slot on the end of the key fob, if it is not there already.

Step 3

Loop one forefinger through the key ring to help give you leverage and a firm grip on the key fob.

Step 4

Pull the two halves apart, exerting increasing pressure until the two halves separate.

Step 5

Pry open the remote case at the seam, using a small screwdriver or your fingernail to expose the battery.

Step 6

Pop out the old battery, and insert a fresh CR2032 battery with the negative (-) side facing up.

Step 7

Snap the case together.

Step 8

Press the two halves of the remote together.
