One advantage of manually managing your music and digital content on the iPhone is the ability to add and remove files without going through a long synchronization process. To manage your music manually with the iPhone, you will need to have the latest version of Apple's iTunes installed on your computer. The iTunes content management software will let you drag and drop files, including songs, videos, books and notes, onto the device with ease.

      Plug in your iPhone to the computer via the USB connector cable.

      Launch the Apple iTunes software on your computer.

      Go to the left sidebar in iTunes and click the iPhone from the "Devices" list.

      Go to the "Summary" tab and select "Manually manage music and videos" from the available options below. Click "Apply" to update the setting on the device.

      Go to your iTunes library and drag individual songs, videos or playlists over the iPhone icon. To drag, just click the left mouse button and hold it down. A document icon will appear when you hover an item over the iPhone's label in the "Devices" pane. This indicates you are about to add an item. The file goes onto the iPhone once you release the left mouse button.
