How to Apply Layer Effects in Adobe Photoshop CS4
Adobe Photoshop CS4's Layers palette makes it possible to actually build a design onscreen. Similar to layering materials in real life, in Photoshop, working with layers gives artists the ability to apply effects to only parts of an image. Using layers with an image means being able to reshuffle the order items appear, hide parts while working on others and taking advantage of effects, which Photoshop CS4 calls "styles."

1
Open Photoshop CS4. Click the "File" menu and click "Open." Browse to the layered image where you plan to apply effects. Note that only the PSD file format can have layers.
-
2
Check whether the "Layers" palette in the bottom-right corner is already opened. If you do not see it, click the "Window" menu and click "Layers" to open it.

-
3
Double-click any of the layers on the palette, such as Layer 1 or the name of a layer if you renamed it. The "Layer Style" window opens. Drag the window to the side so you can see both it and the layer in the main Photoshop canvas.
-
4
Click a line in the "Styles" column, such as "Outer Glow." This places a check in the check box and opens the style's main window --- simply checking the box for the style does not open the window.
-
5
Experiment with the options on the window, which vary with each style, such as changing the glow color, increasing its spread and thickening its reach.
-
6
Click another option in the "Styles" column and repeat, or click the "OK" button when satisfied to set the effect(s) for that layer. Click another layer in the "Layers" palette to apply effects to and continue.
