  1. First Steps to Your Career

    • 1

Present agencies with your portfolio and composite card. This will show them how you photograph, that you understand the industry and what their particular agency is looking for.

Make certain your photos on your composite card are the best and the card stock is of good quality. Your comp card will be used to market you.

Include an introductory letter with your comp card.

Do a follow-up call to the agency within one to two weeks after sending them your comp card.

    • 2

Understand the different types of modeling, such as acting in commercials, promotional or representing a company at their trade show, and fashion modeling.

Fashion modeling can be on a runway or in magazines, known as editorial modeling. Catalog modeling is another type of print modeling. A Fit model has the right proportions and size to work for a particular designer.

    • 3

Decide which market is the best fit for you. The main modeling jobs are commercial print modeling jobs which include: casual and lifestyles modeling, representing a stereotype; corporate modeling, portraying a business or profession; swimwear modeling; fitness; lingerie, in a catalog or on location; glamour modeling, in a wide range of themes; and alternative modeling with a punk or Gothic image.

    • 4

Make a positive first impression by not contacting an agency by email, unless they have instructed you to contact them that way.

Have a portfolio and comp card prepared before contacting an agency.

Wear a simple outfit in solid colors, without jewelry.

    • 5

      Smile, show you have personality.

Take an interest by jotting down important details and ask questions.

Ask for constructive feedback. You will probably have to ask.

      Send a thank you note.
