How to Upgrade and Repair PCs
Computers are like cars: they need tune-ups and occasional repairs to keep them running smoothly. Maintaining your PC helps keep up its speed and processing ability, and keeps it free from crashes and other system errors. In a world where computing is increasingly important in our daily lives, the cost of PC failure can be significant. You don't need to pay a computer technician to fix or upgrade your PC.

1
Install additional random access memory. Boosting the memory will enhance your PC's processing capacity and improve its capability of handling multiple tasks and applications at once. RAM comes in chip form and upgrading the RAM capacity involves opening up the device and inserting the chip into the motherboard.

2
Run disk clean-up utilities. Most operating systems will have built-in disk clean-up utilities that scan your hard drive and remove digital clutter that slows your machine. Periodically use the defragmenter tool to defragment the hard drive.

3
Purchase an external hard drive. If you're PC is nearing capacity, you probably need additional hard disk space. Even if you don't think you'll actually fill your hard drive, a hard drive with minimal free space runs slower and is more prone to problems. Purchase an external hard drive at any computer or office supply store and take the burden off your computer by storing files externally.

4
Update your antivirus software if it's out of date, and run a scan for viruses if you haven't in a while. Computer problems often trace inadvertently to downloaded viruses. Ensure active up-to-date antivirus software runs at all times. Several companies publish free antivirus program for download.

5
Reformat the hard drive. This involves wiping clean the hard drive and restoring it to its original settings, as it was the day you purchased it. Back up your files and reinstall the operating system, for which you will need the original OS disks or the system recovery disks that came with your computer.
