Don't rely on the seasoning packet to flavor your ramen.

Few convenience foods are as cheap and quick as ramen noodles. Unfortunately, like most convenience foods, packaged ramen is loaded with sodium. Read the label carefully -- those quick-cooking bricks of noodles list the nutritional values for half a package, not the whole thing. One package of ramen can top 1,700 mg of sodium. The good news is that almost all of the sodium is in the packet of seasoning. Season the noodles yourself for a quick meal that's cheap, tasty, and better for you. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Package or cup of ramen noodles
  • Sodium-free bullion (powder or granules)
  • Low-sodium soy sauce
  • Hot sauce
  • Herbs and spices of your choice
  • Minced garlic (optional)
  • Diced green onions (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

      Boil one brick of ramen as directed on the package.

      Drain all but about 1/2 cup of water from the noodles.

      Sprinkle 1 to 2 tsp. of sodium-free bullion over the noodles and stir.

      Drizzle with low-sodium soy sauce and/or hot sauce to taste. You can also add other herbs and spices of your choice to the ramen as well as a pinch of minced garlic, powdered ginger, and top with diced greed onions, if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a healthier dish, add fresh or frozen vegetables to the boiling water before adding the noodles.

  • Add sliced cooked chicken, beef, tofu or egg for protein.

  • Other ways to season ramen include adding spaghetti sauce, olive oil and lemon juice, sesame oil and soy sauce and Parmesan cheese.

  • Do not over-boil the noodles, or they will become pasty.
