How to Tether Goats

Tethering a goat can keep it from venturing into dangerous areas.

Some people who keep goats tether them to a post rather than let them run loose. But goats require room to wander, which is why using a type of hook that swivels works effectively. The tether moves with the goat, decreasing the chances of the animal tangling itself around the post. Tethers also work when you need to keep a goat isolated from others, out of certain areas or need to care for it.

Things You'll Need

• Shovel
• Wooden post
• Cement mix
• Bucket
• Stirring stick
• Drill
• Swivel hook
• Tether cord with clamps
• Collar

Instructions

1. Dig a 1-foot hole into the ground. Mix cement with water according to the directions on the packaging. Place one end of the wooden post into the hole. Pour the cement around the base of the post. Wait 24-48 hours to for the cement to harden.

2. Drill a small hole in the top of the post. Screw the swivel hook into the hole.

3. Clip one end of the tether to the hook. Use a tether at least 12 feet long. If you use the tether for milking or bathing, use one 6 feet long.

4. Fasten a collar around the goat's neck. The collar shouldn't fit too tight.

5. Take the goat out to the tether. Clip the end of the tether to the collar.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not leave the goat completely unattended. Check on it every half hour.

• Only tether one goat in an area.
