To become a licensed nurse in the state of New York, you must first pass the NCLEX examination. Eligibility for the exam is determined by the New York State Education Department, which oversees the nursing profession, and which requires you to be at least 18 years of age and of good moral character, and to have met the state's educational requirements for nursing licensure. Additionally, you must receive approval from the Board of Nursing prior to taking the NCLEX if you wish your scores to be considered in your application for licensure as a nurse.
Submit an application for licensure to the New York State Education Department, which serves as the Board of Nursing in New York. Be sure the form is completed in its entirety, and include the licensure fee upon submission.
Application packets can be obtained online at the department's website or by contacting the agency directly and having an application mailed to you.
Contact your nursing school to request that they complete Form 2 in the application packet to verify your educational credentials. The school must send this form directly to the NYS Education Department; you cannot send or deliver it yourself.
Visit the PearsonVUE website and click on the link to "Register." The website will ask which NCLEX exam you wish to take (RN or PN) and for what state, and will collect your personal contact information. You will also be required to pay a $200 exam fee during the registration process. Once registration is completed, PearsonVUE will verify your information with the NYS Education Department.
Await your authorization to test from both the NYS Education Department and PearsonVUE. Once this has been received, you may go online and schedule an examination time and date.
Tips & Warnings
- Results of your test will be sent automatically to the nursing licensing agency. You will be notified usually within four to six weeks of your score and whether you have received licensure or must take further steps, such as re-taking the NCLEX exam.
