How to Do Portraits in GIMP

Many people enjoy taking photos and displaying them for their friends and relatives. Photo portraits are a particular favorite. You may decide after taking a photo of someone that you would like to give it the appearance of a real painted portrait. Traditionally, this has required the help of a professional with expensive software. However, if you have the free graphics program GIMP, you can convert photos into painted portraits yourself.

Instructions

      Load the photo that you want to convert to a portrait on your computer.

      Start the GIMP application. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog that pops open, browse to and open the photo.

      Select "Filter" from the menu and choose "Artistic." From the options, choose "Oilify." In the dialog that appears, set the "Mask Size" to about 10. Click "OK." Save your work.
