How to Tow a Boat With an Allroad

Towing a trailer with your Audi Allroad first requires connecting it properly.

The Audi Allroad Quattro is a capable towing machine. When properly equipped, it is rated to tow a maximum of 3,300 pounds. This is sufficient for a medium-sized utility, camping or boat trailer. Equip the Allroad with a hitch and wiring harness to tow a trailer. Vehicle laws require the trailer harness provide power for brakes, signals and marker lights. Towing a trailer requires some experience to understand how to adjust your driving style to compensate for the reduced handling characteristics.

Instructions

1. Add the weight of the trailer to the weight of the cargo. The trailer's mass is printed on its data plate under gross trailer weight. The result must be less than the towing capacity of your Allroad.

2. Reverse the Allroad up to the trailer, aligning the hitch under the coupler. Have a friend help guide you to the trailer.

3. Lower the trailer's coupler onto the hitch and lock it in place with a hitch pin. Connect the trailer's chains to the hitch, crossing them under the coupler.

4. Push the trailer's four-way electrical connector into the vehicle's receiver. Test the trailer's lights respond properly to the vehicle.

5. Walk around the trailer and vehicle double-checking all the connections.

6. Drive slower than normal to compensate for the reduced handling. Leave twice the normal braking room to assure you don't rear-end the vehicle in front of you. Standard braking room involves one car distance for every 10 miles of speed. Double that when towing a trailer with a boat.
