Make your own wallet out of an empty bag of Friskies cat food.

Leather wallets are durable and fashionable but they can also be quite expensive. Over time, they wear out and must be replaced with equally costly wallets. If you want to receive all the benefits of a wallet but do not want to put up the cost of a leather wallet and its replacements down the line, consider making your own paper wallets. Paper wallets are durable and inexpensive, and they can be made from all kinds of materials, such as construction paper, card stock, even colorful cat food bags.

Things You'll Need

  • Friskies cat food bag (empty)
  • Sheet of 8 1/2-by-11 inch paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Clear packing tape (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the part of the Friskies bag that has the most colors or patterns to make a colorful wallet. Lay a sheet of printer paper down on top of the flattened bag and move it to the desired position. Trace around it. Cut an 8 1/2-by-11 inch section from the Friskies bag with scissors.

    • 2

Fold the cut-out in half width-wise, with the printed side of the paper facing out, so that the paper becomes 5 1/2-by-8 1/2 inches. Fold each half of the paper into the center and crease the folds. Your sheet is now folded into four equal sections.

    • 3

Fold in half length-wise, perpendicular to the other folds you made, leaving the existing creases intact. The resulting piece of folded paper should be about 4 1/4-by-2 3/4 inches.

    • 4

Unfold the paper completely and lay it on a flat surface, positioned so the longer side of the paper is vertical. Cut 1/4-inch slits into the crease of the three folds going across the width of the paper between the four sections.

    • 5

Cut a 1/4-inch strip out of the center fold of bottom two sections of the paper, 1/8 of an inch from each side of the fold. Cut a triangular notch, increasing the size of the strip taken out of the second section, so that the point of the triangle is about 1/4 of an inch out from the center fold on either side. The result should look like a diamond shape cut from the center fold of the second section.

    • 6

Fold down the flaps on either side of the first and third sections from the bottom of the paper that you created by cutting 1/4-inch slits in the fold. Fold the flaps in toward the center of the paper and crease the folds.

    • 7

Bring together the sides of the 1/4-inch strip you cut from the first section so that the sides are flush, and secure it with a piece of tape along the bottom edge of the paper. After completing this step your paper will no longer be completely flat.

    • 8

Refold the wallet following the same process outlined in steps 2 and 3, using the original folds and creases. When you are finished folding the wallet there should be two flaps sticking out from each end of the wallet as a result of the flaps you folded down inside the wallet.

    • 9

Open up the center, vertical fold of the wallet and hold it in your non-dominant hand, one end facing you, with the open side facing up. As you look at the wallet you should see four paper edges in the following order from left to right: one unfolded flap; a pocket; a folded flap; a second unfolded flap; another pocket; and another folded flap on the outside. For the purposes of these instructions the folded and unfolded flaps will be number 1, 2, 3, and 4 from left to right.

    • 10

Fold number 3, the second unfolded flap, over the folded flap numbered 2 into the left pocket and tape it in place. Fold the outer unfolded flap, number 1, over the folded flap numbered 3 into the right pocket and crease all the folds you just made. Repeat this process on the other side of the wallet.

    • 11

Fold your completed wallet in half along the center crease so that the diamond shape is on the inside. Insert bills into the large pocket and insert credit and debit cards into the half pockets through the diamond-shaped opening and the outer pockets.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make your paper wallet more durable, cover the outside printed side with clear plastic packing tape to protect your wallet from water damage.
