How to Work for Two Bosses in the Same Company
Having two bosses can create potential conflicts with responsibilities and time management. Both bosses want your efforts and talents for their own projects. Working under two supervisors who themselves don't collaborate often is more challenging. You need to take an organized approach so you are able to perform well for both bosses without becoming overwhelmed with your duties. Frequent communication with all parties involved allows you to fulfill everyone's needs, including your own need for a conflict-free work environment.

1
Schedule a meeting with both bosses so the three of you can sit down to define your duties. Discuss any potential conflicts you feel will be an issue or already cause you problems.
-
2
Write a schedule that allows you to divide your time appropriately between your responsibilities. Consult with your bosses to determine the percentage of your time that should be devoted to each project if it isn't an even split.
-
-
3
Establish a communication system with each boss based on her preferences. For example, one boss might want you to meet with her daily to go over your tasks while the other may only check in every two or three days. One may prefer email communication while the other likes to meet in person.
-
4
Assign each individual task a priority level as soon as it hits your desk. While all assignments are important, some are urgent due to the deadline or significance of the project. Arrange your work schedule based on the urgency level of each task.
-
5
Document the tasks you handle each day to show each of your bosses as evidence of your duties. Keep a white board or list on a bulletin board that shows the projects you are currently working on so your bosses can see what you have on your plate.
-
6
Communicate with both managers when conflicts arise. If you email one boss about a scheduling conflict or other issue that will affect both projects, send a copy of the email to the other boss.
-
7
Meet with both managers together if they are both demanding your immediate attention to a project. Explain the situation and the amount of time it will take to complete each project. Work out an arrangement to allow you to handle the tasks or get help from another staff member.
-
8
Look for ways to streamline the work and communication process between you and your bosses. Approach them with your ideas to show your initiative and make your work situation easier.

Tips & Warnings
Don't allow your bosses to drag you into the middle of a disagreement. If they disagree about your role or responsibilities, ask them to work it out themselves and let you know of their decision.
Never complain about one boss to the other one. The bosses may discuss your comments, and you look like a gossip.
