How to Disable VMware Ethernet

By default, any new virtual machine created with VMware Player shares the Internet connection of your host computer. VMware creates a private network between the virtual machine and host computer, so that when you open a Web browser on the virtual machine, you can get online without doing any configuration. However, you may encounter situations when you do not want the virtual machine to have Internet access, such as when testing software to confirm that it is safe before installing it on the host computer. Disable the Ethernet capability of your virtual machine to prevent it from accessing the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch VMware Player to display your list of virtual machines.

    • 2

Right-click a virtual machine's name and select "Virtual Machine Settings."

    • 3

      Click the "Hardware" tab.

    • 4

Click "Network Adapter" under the "Device" column.

    • 5

Remove the checks from the "Connected" and "Connect at Power On" boxes on the right side of the window.

    • 6

      Click "OK."

Tips & Warnings

  • Temporarily disable the Ethernet adapter of a virtual machine by clicking the Network Adapter icon at the bottom of the window, then clicking "Disconnect."
