How to Reset a MacBook Pro 17

Problems with your 17-inch MacBook Pro are resolvable by resetting the laptop's system management controller, or SMC. As an extreme measure, a SMC reset should be reserved as a final attempt to correct your laptop's issue. Unnecessary resets can potentially damage your laptop's ability to regulate power and fan speeds. Prior to resetting, you should restart or completely shut down your MacBook Pro to determine if the issue is resolved.

  • Click the "Apple" menu icon on the the desktop, and click "Shut Down" on the sub-menu. The dialog box will close all programs and power off the laptop.

  • Remove the power cable from the laptop, and flip the laptop over with the bottom facing up. Push the latches on the bottom cover up to lift the battery up. Remove the battery from the laptop.

  • Push the power button on the MacBook Pro for five seconds, and insert the battery back into the battery slot on the bottom of the laptop.

  • Plug the power cable into the laptop, and press the power button to turn on the MacBook Pro.
