How to Mow High Weeds With a Riding Mower

Mowing the lawn with a riding mower is one way to get the job done quickly. Although riding mowers make quick work of mowing, there are times when you need to use the riding mower to cut down tall weeds. Tall weeds usually grow in areas that are not mowed often, and are usually near an area of the yard you do not use often. The best way to mow high weeds with a riding mower is to mow the area twice instead of attempting to get through it in one pass. This prevents overworking the mower and possibly damaging the belts or blades. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Walk the area and remove any rocks, sticks or other debris that might get thrown or damage the blades of the mower. Often areas that have high weeds are neglected, especially around wood lines.

    • 2

Adjust the mower deck height to the highest position. Position your riding mower so that the discharge chute is pointing toward the last path you mow. This helps to prevent weeds from clogging under the mowing deck.

    • 3

Mow slowly and release the accelerator when the blades begin to bog down. It might be necessary to place the mower in reverse slightly until the blades rotate freely. If necessary, mow in paths half the width of the mower deck.

    • 4

Wait one day between mowings to allow the previous cut weeds to dry. This is another way to help prevent clogging the weeds under the mower deck.

    • 5

Position the mower deck at the desired height and cut the weeds a second time. This is usually enough to cut weeds down to a more manageable height.

Tips & Warnings

  • Allow the weeds to completely dry before attempting to mow. Wet weeds and grass clumps up and clogs up the mower deck. High weeds require longer periods of time to dry. Most often the best time to cut high weeds with a riding lawn mower is early afternoon.

  • Connect the bagger to your mower, if your mower uses a bagger. Empty the bag frequently. Once you finish mowing the first time, you can often mow the second time directly after instead of waiting for clippings to dry.
