How to Replace a Laptop With an iPad

Laptops were the standard in portable computing for many years, yet it seems their reign is coming to an end. Many laptop owners use their computers almost exclusively for surfing the Web, listening to music, watching TV shows and movies and performing basic office tasks, such as light word processing or basic calculations with a digital calculator. The Apple iPad, a tablet that runs iOS, can do all these things and more. Unlike a laptop, however, the iPad weighs little, doesn't have a keyboard or optical drive, doesn't get hot to the touch and has a long battery life. Replacing your laptop with an iPad can be rewarding if done properly.

Consider whether the iPad can accomplish all the tasks currently performed by your laptop. If, for example, you use your laptop to copy DVDs and perform processor-intensive computing activities, such as digital animation, the iPad will not work for you. If, on the other hand, you use your laptop exclusively for checking email, social networking websites and similar tasks, the iPad may prove adequate.

Determine what kind of software you require and find an equivalent app in the App Store. If you do a lot of word processing, for example, download a word processing application. Some apps are available free, but most cost a small fee.

Copy the personal files from your laptop to the iPad. You can email the files to yourself, then access them on your iPad via your email account. Alternatively, you can upload the files to an online storage site, such as Dropbox (dropbox.com), SpiderOak (spideroak.com) or SugarSync (sugarsync.com), and access them via your iPad's Web browser.

Purchase any iPad accessories you may need for comfortable computing. A Bluetooth iPad keyboard, for example, may be necessary if you're going to do more typing than is required for basic Web browsing. Protective shells are available if the iPad will be transported frequently and are necessary to keep the device in good condition and to protect it from accidents.
