How to Cast Off in Crocheting

How to Cast Off in Crocheting thumbnail
Crochet projects are fastened off - not casted off like knitting projects.

In crochet, the basic stitch is a chain, interlocking each stitch together. This is not like knitting, where one part of the stitch hangs off a needle waiting for you to interlock it with stitches from another needle. In knitting, you must "cast" the stitches off in order to take the needles out without unraveling the fabric. In crochet, the stitches are already locked together, so you can finish the piece at any time. You will need to "fasten" off the piece, though, which is a much simpler process than casting off in knitting.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the yarn leaving a tail of a few inches.

    • 2

Take your crochet hook and draw this tail through the loop that remains on your hook.

    • 3

Remove the hook from the piece and pull the tail tight.

    • 4

Weave the tail through the stitches along the side with a yarn needle to hide the tail.
