How to DCFP Crochet

Front Post Double Crochet (abbreviated FPDC) is a stitch that gives your fabric texture by visibly raising rows. It is used primarily in patterns where the row differentiation is important. When used with a color change, the effect is even more striking. This stitch is a basic double crochet done around the post of the stitch below it instead of into the stitch itself. This stitch is also called a Double Crochet Front Post stitch (DCFP).

Instructions

    • 1

      Yarn over.

    • 2

Insert the hook into the space to the right of the target stitch (or to the left, if you are left-handed) from the front of the fabric to the back of it, so your hook is pointing away from you.

    • 3

Bring the hook back to the front of the fabric on the other side of the stitch. This is the left side if you are right-handed and the right side if you are left-handed. Your hook should now be pointed at you.

    • 4

      Yarn over.

    • 5

Pull the hook back to where you started (the right side of stitch if you are right-handed or the left side if you are left-handed). The yarn should now be looped around the post of the target stitch with the hook on the right (or left) and the yarn from the ball to the left (or right).

    • 6

      Yarn over.

    • 7

Pull the hook through two of the loops on your hook. These are the yarn-over loops from steps one and four.

    • 8

      Yarn over.

    • 9

Pull the hook through the two remaining loops. These are the loops made in step seven and the loop from the previous stitch. You should now have one loop on your hook, and the double crochet stitch should be wrapped around the post of the target stitch below. The DCFP stitch should stick out a bit from the other stitches.

Tips & Warnings

  • A BPDC, or back post double crochet, is done the same way, but the hook is inserted from the back to the front first. The yarn will be wrapped around the front of the post instead of the back of it.
