How to Use Brackets in Titles
Brackets are a punctuation tool that is rarely used in writing. Most educators teach that brackets should be used sparingly because they can make a written page look ugly and overwritten with punctuation. However, there are a few cases when you must use brackets, even in titles. Brackets must be used to make an addition to a quotation for flow purposes, and can be a necessary punctuation addition to your title if you plan to use a quote.

1
Write several quotation titles that can be used to begin your paper. If you are having difficulty coming up with a title, re-read your paper in its entirety. You can use a quotation you from one of the sources you referenced in your paper, or a famous quotation that refers to the ideas that are argued in your paper.

2
Select a quotation to use as your title. Add parentheses around the quotation.

3
Edit the quotation to make it flow. Add any missing words to the quotations, points of ellipses, etc. Encase all additions within a pair of brackets.
