With the right tools, quickly find what you need online.

To perform an Internet search, the basic procedure usually consists of typing the name of what you want to search in a search box of a site like "Bing," "Google" or "Yahoo." However, sometimes for faster and better results you need to use more specific search engines or specific websites. Advanced search tools can help you narrow down your search, social networking sites can help you find people, and using more than one search engine can help you compile search results.

Know what you want to search before you begin. Different search engines specialize in different content. "Google scholar" provides the ability to search for scholarly literature located across the web. "Bing" provides access to great images and map search functions. "Yahoo News" provides news content that relies on human editors rather than on automatons. Social networking sites such as "Facebook," "Twitter," and "LinkedIn" are great research tools for finding people.

Use advanced search engine tools once you have picked a search engine. Google advanced search allows you to search for web pages that have exact word and phrases. You can also specify that you don't want pages with specific words, search within a specific site, specify how many results you want per page, choose the language in which to search for the pages, specify the reading level, and specify the reading level.

Use more than one search engine. "Twingine" displays the search results of "Google" and "Yahoo" on split screens while "Dogpile" combines the search results of "Google," "Yahoo," and "Bing."
