1
Consider planting native trees, plants and flowers throughout your yard. Visit local nurseries to discover which plants are bird favorites.
-
2
Place bird houses in safe, secure areas before the spring to allow for birds such as wrens and chickadees to create nests.
-
-
3
Hang a wire basket, similar to those used to hold suet feeders, filled with natural cotton, pieces of yarn, or Spanish moss for the birds to use as nesting material for their nests. During the nest-building season, your yard will become a frequent visiting spot for numerous bird species.
-
4
Hang bird feeders or scatter wild bird seed mixtures around your yard. If you are looking to attract hummingbirds, hang a hummingbird feeder with a mixture of ¼ cup sugar and 1 cup water. There is no need to purchase special hummingbird food.
-
5
Place a small bird bath in your yard. Birds are always looking for fresh sources of water to drink or bathe in.

Tips & Warnings
To keep squirrels from getting into the bird houses, consider spraying the opening with a mixture of hot sauce and water so it soaks into the wood. Squirrels are known for chewing the wood to make the bird house opening larger and the hot sauce will deter them from chewing.
