How to Update the BIOS on an Acer TravelMate 2420

The Acer TravelMate 2420 series is a line of lightweight notebook computers based on the Intel Celeron Mobile processor and designed to run Windows XP. At the time of publication, this series is discontinued, but units may still be in service and 2420 series notebooks occasionally become available on the pre-owned market. Like all Intel-Windows based personal computers, the Acer TravelMate 2420 series notebooks includes a standard BIOS (basic input-output system) programmed onto its internal read-only memory (ROM) chip. The BIOS loads the operating system. In the event of problems with this function, updating the BIOS is recommended.

Things You'll Need

  • Archiving software, such as WinZip
  • Download the latest version of the BIOS files from the Acer support site. As of May 2011, the latest version is v1.06.

  • Open the .zip file that you have downloaded using your archiving software.

  • Click on the file icon or title marked "AG1A106.bat," and click on "OK" or "YES" if a prompt comes up that asks you to confirm whether you want to run this file.

  • Restart the computer as soon as the file has stopped running. Your computer will now reboot with the updated BIOS.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact tech support before updating your BIOS to be certain that this will indeed solve your problem. Many issues that seem to be related to BIOS are actually battery-related.
  • Make sure your computer is indeed an Acer TravelMate 2420 series before updating the BIOS. Using the wrong files to update your BIOS will cause your computer to stop running. Contact Acer tech support if you need to make sure you are downloading the right BIOS update files.
