If you have to write a paper in high school or college, there's a good chance that you will be required to use American Psychological Association style. This style of writing provides a uniform standard for the formatting of formal papers. Since there are many rules contained within the APA style guide, it can be hard to remember the correct way to write certain things, percentages being one them. However, expressing percentages in APA style is an easy task once you learn how to do it.
Things You'll Need
- Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (optional)
Use the percent symbol -- % -- with figures. For example, 45% is the proper way to express a percentage using APA style. Remember to use figures for numbers 10 and above.
Use the word "percent" when a number is spelled out. For example, "five percent" is the proper format in such a case. Spell out numbers one through nine.
Spell out the word "percentage" when it is used in a sentence without a specific amount. "A large percentage of students applied for financial aid." is an example of the proper use of the word.
Tips & Warnings
- Make sure to spell out all numbers at the beginning of sentences.
