When you need to do math quickly, rounding numbers can make it easier for you. Rounding to the nearest thousand works when accuracy is less important than a general estimate. The rule of thumb for rounding thousands is that any number ending in 001 to 499 gets rounded down to the nearest thousand. Any number that ends in 500 or higher gets rounded up to the nearest thousand.

  • Round the number 1004 to the nearest thousand. Look at the ending three digits: "004". Decide whether you should round up or down based on those numbers. Round down to create an answer of 1000.

  • Round the number 5499 to the nearest thousand. Look at the last three digits: "499". Decide whether it should be rounded up or down based on that information. Round down to 5000.

  • Round the number 8501 to the nearest thousand. Look at the last three digits: "501". Decide whether to round up or down. Round up to 9000.

  • Round the number 9600 to the nearest thousand. Look at the last three digits: "600". Decide whether to round up or down. Round up to 10,000.
