How to Get Rid of Your Firefox Add-Ons

Firefox allows you to download add-ons to add extra functionality to the browser. Three types of add-ons can be installed: themes, plugins and extensions. Themes allow you to change appearance of the browser, while plugins allow you to add players for various types of Internet content such as music and video. Extensions add functionality, and can show information about Web pages or change the content. Examples include real-time currency converters, which can automatically change foreign currencies to your local currency, or Web page editors to change the page display. Add-ons all use extra resources, so disable any unused plugins.

Firefox 4

  • Open Firefox 4, then click the "Firefox" button at the top left of the browser screen.

  • Click "Add-ons" to open the Firefox "Add-ons Manager." Click on the "Extension" or "Plugins" tabs depending on the type of add-on.

  • Disable an active plugin by clicking the "Disable" button, which turns off the plugin but does not remove it from the browser.

  • Remove a plugin entirely by clicking the "Remove" button, which turns off the plugin and removes its files.

Firefox 3

  • Open Firefox 3, and then click "Tools" at the top of the Firefox window. Click "Add-ons" to open the Firefox 3 "Add-ons Manager."

  • Click on the relevant plugin from the "Extension" or "Plugins" tabs, then click the "Disable" button to disable the plugin.

  • Click the "Uninstall" button to complete remove "Extensions" or "Themes" from Firefox.

  • Click "Restart Firefox" if the prompt appears to complete the removal process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check your add-ons every couple of months, and remove any plugins that you no longer use to maintain optimal system performance.
