Colorado hunters receive preference points for every unsuccessful draw in a limited tag unit. Every unsuccessful year increases the odds of drawing a tag for the following year with the accumulation of more preference points. The Colorado Division of Wildlife manages the lottery system and determines the number of tags issued for each species in a hunting unit. The annual tag numbers are determined based on the population surveys conducted by wildlife biologists. Preference points are used for elk, mule deer, black bear, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, moose and antelope in limited draw, trophy areas.
Things You'll Need
- CID number
Locate your Colorado hunting or fishing license. Find the CID number on the top of the license and display it in a visible area. The CID is an identification number used by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. The number is used to access all of the license fees paid by the hunter or angler.
Visit the Colorado Division of Wildlife website at wildlife.state.co.us and click on the "Big Game" tab in the left sidebar. Click on the "Draw Results and Preference Points" option in the drop-down menu.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and locate the preference points search box. Select the "All Years" option to view all of your accumulated preference points. Enter your CID number in the search box and submit the query to retrieve your information.
If you do not have a CID number or have used multiple CID numbers, enter your name, date of birth and zip code into the search boxes on the bottom of the form. Submit the form to retrieve the combined results or to retrieve your CID number.
Tips & Warnings
- Do not lose your original Colorado hunting or fishing license. Losing the license often leads to multiple CID numbers and confusion about the preference points and applications process.
- Multiple preference points do not guarantee you will draw a tag. The points increase the chances in the lottery, but there is not a 100 percent success rate.
