You can easily send a song through text messages using file sharing programs or attachments. Texting sounds and other audio files is possible through iOS and Android devices. You can either create a new file to share through a text message or locate an existing file to share. The only downside when you send a song through text is the required purchase or ownership of the song to download and send it out.

While plenty of paid file sharing services exist, you can also text message songs for free using free trials or completely free file transfer programs. Some of these will require the user to create an account with the service to open and listen to audio files, while others will simply use a read only or listen only protocol for the file. The user on the receiving end will open and listen to the song without the ability to save or edit the song to their phone or cloud storage. The song is working as an attachment and the file is actually hosted off the phone. That means the receiving party must have WiFi or strong service to listen to the song. Songs that are saved to your phone or cloud have the potential to attach without an outside service as they are hosted on your phone directly.

Text a Song

Songs and audio files already saved to your phone are easy to text. On an Android, open the intended recipient in your text messages and select the "Plus" sign to add a file. Several options will appear for different file types. Select the "Audio" option then hit "Choose a music track" to send a saved song. The "Audio Picker" option is also available for clips, ring tones and other audio tracks saved to the phone. Choose your song and send it out. On an iPhone, pull up your music playlist and select the song you wish to share. Select "Share" to generate several options for sharing methods. Choose "Text" and select a recipient to send the song. They will require an iTunes account to open and listen to the song.

Creating a Shareable File

Shareable files are ideal for audio files texted between platforms. Android and iPhone audio files are not compatible. To create a universal file, save the audio to WeTransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive or any other file sharing platform. Access the file through your phone and use the sharing settings to send as a text message. This will not embed the song in the text but it will act as an attachment or link to access the file. You will retain control over the file while the recipient can access and listen according to the permissions you assign.
